A merger of two Community Centres
A One-dissolution merger of two Community Centres
Shipley and Bingley Voluntary Services (SBVS) worked with a Community Association for several months assisting with strategic planning. Difficult issues had led to its community centre being closed and put on the market for sale. Exploratory meetings were brokered between the Community Association and a nearby Sports Social Club regarding a potential partnership between the two organisations.
Both organisations had much to gain potentially by a combination of their assets. An interim management committee was formed with representatives from both organisations and agreed to work towards merger. A new Company Limited by Guarantee was formed: its name reflecting both 'parent' charities.
The key objective was to form one organisation to be the social hub of the area. Assets from the closed Community Association will be applied to develop a purpose-built community facility within the new combined premises. The interim Management Committee has been assisted to develop a Business Plan, and sessions with an external facilitator have been vital to:
· Sharing background and experiences
· Building trust and confidence
· Tackling issues and improved joint working
· Keeping it fun and moving forward positively
Lessons learnt include:
· Allow plenty of time and capacity to support!
· Do involve an external facilitator
· Remember that trustees are volunteers
· Believe that working together can secure a better deal for beneficiaries
